Celebrate Mother’s Day on a Low Budget

Celebrate Mother’s Day on a Low Budget

You know at least one person in your life—and probably many more—who has the world’s toughest job: being a mom.

Motherhood is a 24/7, 365-day commitment, and requires an incredible amount of selflessness and unconditional love. So how do you thank someone who gives every bit of themselves to you? Simple: your gift should express gratitude and appreciation for what your mom has done for you.

If you’re reading this, you don’t have much time left to get your mother a gift—but not to worry! Here at Mercy Home, we’ve come up with six low-cost, easy-to-do Mother’s Day gifts to help you out!

Call your mom

Can’t be home for Mother’s Day? Then calling your mom is a must. All mothers—and parents or guardians, for that matter—just want to know that you are alive and well, and want to know what’s going on in your life. Don’t forget to ask her about what’s going on in her life, too! She may have picked up a new hobby, started up classes again, or wants to let you know what your friends’ parents from high school are up to. Spend some time catching up!

Be sure to also text your mom the day before to see what her schedule is going to be like on Mother’s Day—that way, you can avoid playing phone tag and potentially missing your mom altogether!

Create a card

Don’t settle for a cheesy card from the store that so many other people are going to by their moms. Make your own! Giving your mom an original creation lets her know that you put some thought and care into her gift. Draw a picture of a memento or place that reminds your mom of a special time that you two together, or decorate it with photos of you and her.

If you’re not the best artist, that’s ok, too. There’s plenty of websites that offer templates and clipart that you can use to personalize your message. The most important thing is that the card comes from you and lets her know how grateful you are for all she’s done for you.

Give mom the day off

A few organizations have attempted to quantify the monetary worth of stay-at-home moms. Salary.com, for example, estimates that stay-at-home moms work hours a week in 2016, and should be compensated with a yearly salary of $143,102. That’s because your mom’s responsibilities include acting as your family’s cook, housekeeper, emotional and psychological therapist, janitor, nutritionist, photographer, driver, and a million and one other tasks.

So, give your mom the day off! Let her kick her feet up and tune in to her favorite show, read her favorite book, or just take a nap while you take over responsibilities for the day. If you don’t have time to take over for an entire day, make some coupons for each chore that she can redeem throughout the year. You’ll not only be providing your mom with a well-deserved break—you’ll better appreciate how difficult it is to be a mom.

Make a nice meal

Cooking for your mom could fall under the last mother’s idea, but there’s a reason we think a nice meal could be a standalone gift. Blog RetailMeNot recently went straight to the source—real moms—to find out what mothers want for their special day. A quarter of moms said they wanted a “nice meal” with their loved ones.

The mothers who were surveyed didn’t specify whether they wanted a home-cooked meal or not, so feel free to make reservations at your mother’s favorite restaurant. If you want to save some money, though, then go ahead and take a stab at cooking a meal for your mom. (And doing the dishes!) Make your mom her favorite meal and get her favorite dessert for a thoughtful—and sweet—touch.

Create a Photo Album

You may not remember your years as a baby, but we guarantee you your mother can’t forget them. For so many moms, their children grow up in the blink of an eye, and no matter how old you are, your mom think of you when you were younger.

What better way to celebrate Mother’s Day then, but to make a photo album of you and your mom through the years. Reach out to relatives for photos that your mom may not have for a nice surprise when she looks through the collection of memories, and don’t forget to include her favorite photos. Be sure to leave some room at the end of the book for her to add her own photos!

Share Your Time with Your Mom

It may seem simple, but we guarantee your mom will appreciate it. Take your mom to do her favorite exercise, like going for a walk, riding a bike, or playing tennis. If there’s a movie you know she wants to see, surprise her with tickets to a showing. Play a board game or a puzzle—whatever you do, just remember that the most important thing is to you are give your mom your undivided attention. Turn your phone off (or at least put it on silent) and enjoy whatever activity you do together. Sharing your time with your mom will let her know how important she is to you, and will give you too a chance to strengthen your relationship.

Good luck, and Happy Mother’s Day!
