As we enter another New Year, many of us are turning our minds toward resolutions we can make to improve ourselves in the future. This is also an opportunity to be with God, by thanking Him for what is past and praying for His mercy in what’s to come.
January is, I think, a month of rebirth—a chance to start over. That is why so many look at the New Year as a chance to make a change. This may be through goals like trying to lose weight, or save money, or simply be a better person. So often people set resolutions for themselves, but they just can’t seem to follow through with their decision for the year. Perhaps this is because we often cannot see how our resolutions fit within a bigger life picture.
The start of another year is an occasion to sit and understand God’s love for us. Our lives are fundamentally changed by Christ. If God becoming human was not a world-altering event, why would He do so at all? God comes for our sakes, not His own, to change the world forever. That is what all the amazement is about.
Because of this, it is appropriate that we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord this month. This revelation of God’s saving action is not just a past event we gather to remember, but also a present and ongoing reality. All along, salvation was part of God’s plan for us. This is a startling revelation. The life of the Church and of every Christian is an epiphany—a manifestation of the saving Lord in our midst yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
In 2020, I wish for peace within each of you and a rediscovery of God’s saving love for us all. From all of us here at Mercy Home for Boys & Girls, Happy New Year! I pray the Lord grants you and your loved ones His blessings.
