Second Sunday of Lent

Second Sunday of Lent Homily Transcript

So we journey deeper into this holy season of Lent, 40 days and 40 nights, as we prepare ourselves for the great celebration of Easter. And the disciplines of Lent are prayer, and fasting, and acts of kindness. So we’re asked to do, to help us to draw closer to the Lord, as we journey together towards Lent.

The Gospel today, this second Sunday, is about perspective, and more. Perspective, how it is that we see things. I stand here and I look at our Knights of Columbus, and I look at their family members, and with some of their children and wives. And I can see from a certain perspective. But if I change my perspective, and I come over here, I can see Jeff Griggs sitting right there. And I can see that he’s wearing a watch. Now from this perspective, I can’t see it. But if you change your perspective, you can see things differently.

As I say, today’s Gospel is about perspective, and more. Jesus takes His disciples up into the mountains, so you know that a revelation is going to take place. They take place in the mountains. And there He’s with his disciples. And then, who arrives on the scene, as it were. Moses and Elijah. Moses, who represents the law. Elijah, who represents the best of the prophets. And in Moses, and in Elijah, they come together. And there is Jesus. And a new perspective or understanding is given to his disciples, and to us.

Jesus is the fulfillment of the law and the prophets. They come together in Him. And the disciples are overjoyed at this wonderful moment, of seeing Jesus differently. Understanding that He is the Son of God. The voice that says, listen to Him, as we are called to listen to Him. And in this wondrous moment, the disciples want to stay right there in the mountains. And who wouldn’t? But Jesus says, “No, we must go down.” Because the work of God in this world of ours is on a even playing field. It’s face to face with one another. Those are the ways in which we reach out, and we help, and we transform life. We see life differently as disciples of the Lord. We see each other as brothers and sisters. We work together to enhance, and make better, and bring about the Kingdom of God.
