Of Sunday Mass at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in Chicago.
Good morning and welcome to Sunday Mass at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
Today we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent.
My name is dan riley.
I am joined by Tom McNamara and Joyce McQuiggin
And our celebrant is Fr. Scott Donahue,
President of Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
∫ A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing. ∫
∫ Protecting us with staff and rod, ∫
∫ Empower all prevailing. ∫
∫ What if the nations rage and surging seas rampage? ∫
∫ What though the mountains fall, the Lord is God of all. ∫
∫ On earth is found no equal. ∫
We journey together, we enter this holy season of Lent
As we offer our prayer in the name of the father
And of the son and of the Holy Spirit.
-Amen.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ
And the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit
Be with each of you.
-And with your spirit.
My friends as we gather we just pause for a moment.
We acknowledge our faults and our failings.
We acknowledge our dependency upon God and all things.
God’s love, God’s mercy and certainly God’s forgiveness.
Lord Jesus may we draw closer to you
During this holy season of Lent through our prayer.
Lord have mercy.
-Lord have mercy.
May we draw closer to you through our fasting.
Christ have mercy.
-Christ have mercy.
May we draw closer to you through our reaching out
And helping sister and brother in need.
Lord have mercy.
-Lord have mercy.
May almighty God have mercy on us,
Forgive us of our sin and bring us to life everlasting.
-Amen.
Let us pray.
Grant almighty God, through the yearly observances of holy Lent
That we may grow in understanding
Of the riches hidden in Christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects.
Through our Lord, Jesus Christ, your son;
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God forever and ever.
Amen.
A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy.
Moses spoke to the people saying,
“The priest shall receive the basket from you
And you shall set it in front of the altar
Of the Lord your God.
Then you shall declare before the Lord your God.”
My father was a wandering Aramaean who went down
To Egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien.
But there he became a nation – great, strong, and numerous.
When the Egyptians maltreated and oppressed us,
Imposing hard labor upon us, we cried to the Lord,
The God of our fathers,
And he heard our cry and saw our affliction,
Our toil, and our oppression.
He brought us out of Egypt with his strong hand
And outstretched arm, with terrifying power,
With signs and wonders, and bringing us into the country.
He gave us this land flowing with milk and honey.
Therefore I have now brought you the first fruits
Of the products of the soil,
Which you, o Lord, have given me.
And having set them before the Lord your God,
You shall bow down in his presence.
The word of the Lord.
-Thanks be to God.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble. ∫
∫ Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble. ∫
∫ He who dwells in the shelter of the most high ∫
∫ And abides in the shade of the almighty says to the Lord, ∫
∫ My refuge, my stronghold, my God in whom I trust. ∫
∫ Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble. ∫
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans.
Brothers and sisters, what does scripture say?
The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart.
That is the word of faith that we preach.
For if you confess with your mouth
That Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart
That God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
For one believes with the heart and so is justified.
And one confesses with the mouth and so is saved.
For the scripture says, no one who believes in him will be put to shame.
For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek.
The same Lord is Lord of all.
Enriching all who call upon him.
For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
The word of the Lord.
-Thanks be to God.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Praise to you, word of God, Lord Jesus Christ. ∫
∫ Praise to you, word of God, Lord Jesus Christ. ∫
∫ One does not live on bread alone, ∫
∫ But on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God. ∫
∫ Praise to you, word of God, Lord Jesus Christ. ∫
The Lord be with each of you.
-And with your spirit.
Ours is a reading taken from the holy gospel
According to St. Luke.
-Glory to you, o Lord.
Filled with the Holy Spirit,
Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit
Into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil.
He ate nothing during those days
And when they were over he was hungry.
The devil said to him, “if you are the son of God,
Command these stones to become bread.”
Jesus answered him,
“It is written, one does not live on bread alone.”
Then the devil took him up and showed him
All the kingdoms of the world in a single instant.
The devil said to him, “I shall give you all
This power and glory, for it has been handed
Over to me and I may give it to whomever I wish.
All this will be yours if you worship me.”
Jesus said in reply, “it is written. You shall worship the Lord your God
And him alone shall you serve.”
Then the devil led him to Jerusalem
And made him stand on the parapet of the temple
And said to him, “if you are the son of God,
Throw yourself down from here for it is written.
He will command his angels concerning you
To guard you and with their hands they will support you
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.”
Jesus said to him in reply, “it also says, you shall not
Put the Lord, your God to the test.”
When the devil had finished every temptation,
He departed from him for a time.
The gospel of the Lord.
-Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
I think many of you know that my dad passed away when I was in seventh grade. It was traumatic for our family.
One of my favorite memories of my dad is on Sundays we would go visit my grandmother and the whole family would pile into the car. Mom and dad, my two sisters, my brother and I. Before the car ever left the driveway, My father would have us make the sign of the cross together. The sign of the cross was a sign that we were going on a journey, a trip together. We asked for the blessings of God to be with us.
This past Wednesday we celebrated Ash Wednesday. We went to church and we received the sign of the cross in ashes on our forehead. The words were told us, turn away from sin and follow the good news or remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return. And so our Lenten journey of 40 days began.
During the Lenten season the church gives us three disciplines to follow. Simple and difficult at the same time
But they are a wonderful guide into this holy season. To pray, to fast, and to do acts of kindness And charity for one another. The disciplines of Lent to help to purify our minds and our bodies and our spirits as we draw closer to the Lord and one another.
In the gospel today Jesus is led out into the desert by the spirit, how important that is. God is with Jesus in every moment of life and he’s tempted by the devil. We all know the story. Tempted about material things, tempted about prestige, tempted about honor. And Jesus says no to all of it.
Jesus knows that the source of life, the source of love, the source of his ability to do the work of the gospel comes from his father. You shall not put the Lord your God to a test and Jesus refuses the temptations of the devil. The devil says though at the end I’ll look for another time to tempt you. The temptations are with us in every moment of life. You know that and I know that.
But if we keep focused on the Lord, if we keep focused on our prayer, on our fasting and reaching out to help one another, those beautiful disciplines of Lent will be just fine. I pray for you. I pray for your families that this be the very best of Lents, together.
Let’s profess now what we believe.
I believe in one God, the father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
Of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
The only begotten son of God,
Born of the father before all ages,
God from God, light from light,
True God from true God, begotten not made,
Consubstantial with the father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven
And by the power of the Holy Spirit
He was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered death and was buried.
He rose again on the third day
In accordance with the scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
And is seated at the right hand of the father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead
And of his kingdom there will be no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
Who proceeds from the father and son,
Who with the father and the son is adored and glorified,
Who has spoken to the prophets.
I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
And the life of the world to come.
Amen.
We take this opportunity now as we place our own prayers,
Hopes and dreams before our God who loves us dearly.
Our response to each prayer will be, “Lord, hear our prayer.”
For our holy father and all clergy,
May their voices be heard as they call all people
To reflect on the significance of the Lenten season
As a time of humility, generosity and reconciliation.
We pray to the Lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
For those who have just moved into nursing homes,
May the Lord’s presence comfort them
In their time of transition.
We pray to the Lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
For the boys and girls of mercy home,
May they experience the compassion of others
During this Lenten season.
We pray to the Lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
For the poor, persecuted and sick,
May they feel God’s presence and love in their lives.
We pray to the Lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
We pray to the prayer of the angels in heaven,
That there might be peace on earth, goodwill towards all.
We pray to the Lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
Gracious and loving God,
We trust we know that you hear all of our prayers.
The prayers we pray out loud,
Certainly all those prayers that rest
In the quiet of our hearts.
Help us to be faithful disciples.
Help us during this Lenten season
To draw closer to you and to your people.
This we pray through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
∫ [Music playing] ∫
Pray, my friends, my sisters, my brothers,
That this our sacrifice may be acceptable to God,
The father almighty.
May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands
For the praise and glory of his name,
For our good and the good of all his holy church.
Give us the right dispositions, o Lord, we pray,
To make these offerings, for with them we celebrate
The beginning of this venerable and this sacred time.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Lord is with you.
-And with your spirit.
Lift up your hearts.
-We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.
-It is right and just.
It is truly right and just.
Our duty and salvation always and everywhere
To give you thanks, Lord, holy father,
Almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord.
By abstaining 40 long days from earthly food,
He consecrated through this fast the pattern
Of our Lenten observance.
And by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent,
He taught us to cast out the leaven of malice
So that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery,
We might pass over at last
To the eternal paschal feast.
And so with the company of the angels
And with all the saints, we sing the hymn of your praises
As without end we acclaim.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Holy, holy holy; ∫
∫ Lord God of hosts, ∫
∫ Heaven and earth are full of your glory. ∫
∫ Hosanna in the highest. ∫
∫ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. ∫
∫ Hosanna in the highest. ∫
You are indeed holy, o Lord, the fount of all holiness.
Make holy therefore these gifts, we pray.
By sending down your spirit upon them like the dew falls
So that they become for us
The body and blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
At the time that he was betrayed
And entered willingly into his passion,
He took bread and giving thanks, he broke it.
He gave it to his disciples saying,
“Take this all of you and eat of it,
For this is my body which will be given up for you.”
In a similar way when the supper was ended
He took the chalice and once more giving thanks,
He gave it to his disciples saying,
“Take this all of you and drink from it,
For this is the chalice of my blood,
The blood of the new and the eternal covenant
Which will be poured out for you and for many
For the forgiveness of sins.
Do this in memory of me.”
The mystery of faith.
∫ ∫ [Piano music] ∫ ∫
∫ When we eat this bread and drink this cup, ∫
∫ We proclaim your death, o Lord, until you come again. ∫
Therefore as we celebrate the memorial
Of his death and his resurrection
We offer to you, Lord,
The bread of life and the chalice of salvation.
Giving thanks that you’ve held us worthy
To be in your presence and minister to you.
Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ
We may be gathered into one
By the Holy Spirit.
Remember Lord your church spread throughout the world
And bring her to the fullness of charity.
Together with Francis our Pope, Blase… our bishop,
And with all your faith filled people.
Remember also our sisters and our brothers
Who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection
And all of those who have died in your mercy.
Welcome them into the light of your presence.
Have mercy on us all, we pray,
That with the blessed Virgin Mary the mother of God,
With her blessed spouse Joseph,
With the blessed apostles and with all the martyrs,
With all the saints that have pleased you
Throughout the ages, that we may merit
To be co-heirs to eternal life.
May praise and glorify you through your son, Jesus Christ.
Through him and with him and in him,
O God, almighty father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
All glory and honor is yours forever and ever.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Amen, amen, amen. ∫
His disciples came up to him and they said,
“Lord, teach us how to pray.”
And he said, “when you pray, pray like this:”
Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those
Who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil
And graciously grant peace in our day,
That by the help of your mercy we may be freed from sin
And saved from all distress
As we await the blessed hope,
The coming of our savior, Jesus Christ.
For the kingdom, the power,
And the glory are yours now and forever.
And Lord Jesus Christ,
Who said to his apostles, “peace I leave you.
It is my peace that I give to you.
Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church
And graciously grant her peace and unity
In accordance with your will,
Who lives and reigns forever and ever.
Amen.
The peace of the risen Lord be with each of you.
-And with your spirit.
Share the Lord’s peace.
For those of you who are at home
Who are celebrating this eucharist
With us here at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls,
I pray that you receive God’s choicest blessings
And the peace of Christ in your life.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Lamb of God, ∫
∫ You take away the sins of the world. ∫
∫ Have mercy on us. ∫
∫ Lamb of God, ∫
∫ You take away the sins of the world. ∫
∫ Have mercy on us. ∫
∫ Lamb of God, ∫
∫ You take away the sins of the world. ∫
∫ Grant us peace. ∫
My friends, behold Jesus,
The lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world,
The bread of life that comes down from heaven.
Blessed are those invited to the supper of the lamb.
Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof,
But only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
For those of you at home, please turn to page six
In your tv mass guide and join in singing
Our communion song, “merciful God.”

∫ People who hunger for you. ∫
∫ Surely you alone can save us. ∫
∫ You pay our price with precious blood. ∫
∫ Reaching through your great compassion, ∫
∫ You lift up your people with love. ∫
∫ Feed us and guide us, merciful God. ∫
∫ Light when the shadows of life cloud our view. ∫

Renew now with heavenly bread, by which faith is nourished,
Hope increased, and charity strengthened.
We pray, o God, that we may learn to hunger for Christ,
The true and the living bread,
And to strive to live by every word
Which proceeds from your mouth through Christ our Lord.
-Amen.
The Lord is with you.
-And with your spirit.
May the many blessings of almighty God,
The father and the son and the Holy Spirit
Come upon all of you, your family members and friends,
And remain with you forever.
-Amen.
Our mass has ended.
Go in peace.
-Thanks be to God.

My friends, behold Jesus,
The lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world,
The bread of life that comes down from heaven.
Blessed are those invited to the supper of the lamb.
Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof,
But only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

Renew now with heavenly bread, by which faith is nourished,
Hope increased, and charity strengthened.
We pray, o God, that we may learn to hunger for Christ,
The true and the living bread,

May the many blessings of almighty God,
The father and the son and the Holy Spirit
Come upon all of you, your family members and friends,
And remain with you forever.

The following presentation is made possible
By the generosity of the viewers
Through our Lord, Jesus Christ, your son;
