This year, to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr., our MercyWorkers set aside Wednesday, January 22, as a day of
service.
The MercyWorkers learned about the history of public housing in Chicago, with a
specific focus on the Cabrini Green neighborhood.
Their day began at the Newberry Library, where they met with the Vice President of Research and Academic Programs D. Bradford Hunt, who gave them an overview of the history of public housing in Chicago. They then watched the documentary “70 Acres in Chicago,” which touched on themes of racism, gentrification, and public housing in Chicago, and had a Q&A with 70 Acres documentarian Ronit Bezalel and participant Raymond “Shaq” McDonald.
The day concluded with a tour of the Cabrini Green neighborhood and an afternoon of volunteering with school-aged children at the By the Hand Kids Club.
This day of service was a wonderful opportunity for our
MercyWorkers to help create solutions to social problems and help those in
need.
