For the 13th year in a row, Mercy Home for Boys & Girls was named to the Chicago Tribune’s Top Workplaces list. The award was announced during the 15th annual Chicago Tribune Top Workplaces Awards Wednesday night. The full list of winners will appear in a special section of the Chicago Tribune on Friday, November 15.
The recent honor comes during the same year Mercy Home was named among the country’s top nonprofit workplaces by the Top Workplaces National Industry Awards program and a national overall top workplace by the USA Today. It was also recognized in the category of professional development by the Top Workplaces Program this fall.
Like those awards, the recognition in the Chicago Tribune is based entirely on employee feedback gathered through a confidential, third-party survey administered by employee engagement technology partner Energage LLC. The survey uniquely measures 15 culture drivers that are critical to the success of any organization: including alignment, execution, and connection, just to name a few.
Mercy Home remains distinct among others on the list for its longevity. Mercy Home has been named a top workplace every year since it first participated in 2012. Only six companies or organizations have been on the list for longer.
“Being named a top workplace every year is one of the accomplishments of our Home about which I am most proud,” said Mercy Home President & CEO Fr. Scott Donahue. “Especially as the distinction reflects the experience and feedback of our coworkers. That feedback reveals so much about the ways everyone here supports one another and works together to provide the best care for the young people and families who count on us. They are the reason that we continue to enjoy this result and I’m deeply grateful.”

Energage CEO Eric Rubino praised the organizations whose employees put them on the Top Workplaces list. “Earning a Top Workplaces award is a badge of honor for companies, especially because it comes authentically from their employees,” said Eric Rubino, Energage CEO. “That’s something to be proud of. In today’s market, leaders must ensure they’re allowing employees to have a voice and be heard. That’s paramount. Top Workplaces do this, and it pays dividends.”
Feedback from the survey consistently show that the mission-based culture at Mercy Home and opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others play a significant role in what attracts, retains, and keeps coworkers engaged.
“My own experience in working at Mercy Home for the past 34 years has shown me just how special this place truly is,” Fr. Scott said. ” And it’s because Mercy Home is so special, and because of our reputation in Chicago and beyond, caring, compassionate people are consistently drawn to the work that we do here.”
Mercy Home continues to reach out to qualified professionals throughout our area to consider applying for open positions, particularly as we work to care for more young people at the Home in the years to come. “The need to extend our services to more children and families remains as critical as ever,” Fr. Scott said. “So, to anyone looking for a place to make a real difference in young lives while building their careers, I say come and take a look at opportunities here at Mercy Home for Boys & Girls”
To determine the Top Workplaces, the Chicago Tribune invited Energage to conduct and analyze confidential surveys of more than 100,000 Chicago-area employees, including our Mercy Home coworkers. The results determined the top-ranking small, mid-sized, and large organizations in the area. Mercy Home again earned its spot among mid-sized organizations, which was defined as those employing between 250-999 people. The full list of winners was published in a special section inside the Chicago Tribune.
